LA MISA CRIOLLA

The “Misa Criolla” - “Navidad Nuestra”

The "Misa Criolla” is a musical work for soloists, choral and orchestra of a religious and folkloric nature created by the Argentinean composer and pianist Ariel Ramirez.

The liturgical texts were translated and adapted by the priests Antonio Osvaldo Catena, Alejandro Mayol y Jesús Gabriel. This is considered as one of the great works of Argentinean music.

The work was inspired and is dedicated to two German nuns, Elisabeth y Regina Brückner, who under the nazis provided food to prisoners in a concentration camp. At the same time, with the “Misa Criolla” Ariel Ramirez composed “Navidad Nuestra” with the words of Félix Luna, included on the B side of the launched album.

The “Misa Criolla” has been interpreted by various world-wide renowned artists and it is the only Argentinean work that has been edited in five continents. One amongst the highly known versions is the one of Zamba Quipildor played in Italy in 1974, with the choir “Los Madrigalistas de Bucarest” and the one that Mercedes Sosa played in 2000, for which she received the Latino Grammy price.

Saul Zaks interpreted the “Misa Criolla” and the “Navidad Nuestra” together with the composer Ariel Ramírez and Zamba Quipildor in a series of concerts in Israel in 1997.

Saul Zaks has also accompanied the singer Mercedes Sosa at a presentation staged at the Eichal Hatarbut (Mann Auditorium) in Tel Aviv, together with her guitarist, Nicolás "Colacho" Brizuela.
